Press Fails to Give Comprehensive Coverage of Women’s Issues

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Republican Council of Women (RCW) together with the International Fund of Electoral Systems (IFES) has executed a USAID-financed program on the analysis of articles dealing with women’s problems and printed in ten periodicals in Armenia from January to July of 2001.

According to Nora Hakobyan–the RCW Chairwoman–the coverage of women’s problems in the press bears an episodic character and is not distinguished. RCW is trying to compensate for the absence of its own printed organ by cooperating with the press and publishing separate handbooks. After the stoppage of the publication of the Aragast weekly newspaper in 1994–the Ladies & Gentlemen’supplement to the Novoye Vremya (New Time) newspaper were released in 1996-98–and now the Zaruhi supplement to the Iravunk newspaper are being published that deal with issues most important to women.
