Azerbaijan Hopes to Receive $100 in Aid From US

BAKU (Armenpress)–Azerbaijani Foreign Affairs Minister Vilayat Quliyev is confident that the US will decide to repeal Section 907 by the end of December–2001. Section 907 prohibits the US government to allocate direct aid to Azerbaijan unless it lifts its blockade of Nagorno Karabakh and Armenia.

Baku-based 525 Gazet quoted the Azerbaijani representative in the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Gultekin Hajiyeva as saying that the US passed Section 907 "based on false information." She said Azerbaijan was hoping to receive $100 million annually in aid by closely aligning itself with the US in its fight against terrorism.

Hajiyeva said that Azeri authorities should try to work out mechanisms to prevent the dissemination of false information about Karabakh by Armenian organizations–and to fight against the powerful Armenian lobby in the US.
