114 HIV Patients in Azerbaijan in 2001

BAKU (Armenpress)–"A total of 363 people with AIDS have been registered in Azerbaijan since 1997. Of these–342 are Azerbaijani citizens and 21 are foreigners. A total of 26 patients have died–another 30 people are in the last stages of the illness. Of the HIV-infected–250 are men–76 are women and the identity of 16 people is unknown (they were diagnosed anonymously)," according to official figures.

The HIV cases in Azerbaijan are increasing every year. If 64 HIV-positive people were registered in the country in 2000–114 people were registered in 11 months of 2001–and another 121 people are suspected of having AIDS.

The majority of AIDS sufferers in Azerbaijan are drug addicts (164 people–or 47.9 per cent). Two are homosexuals–94 are heterosexuals–one was infected during a blood transfusion and 76 people were infected by unknown means.

Approximately one third of the AIDS sufferers–or 133 people–were infected abroad–of whom 113 in Russia–10 in Ukraine–six in Arab countries–two in Belarus and two in Kazakhstan. Four doctors were dismissed this year for publicizing information about people with AIDS without their consent.
