French Ambassador Proud to Have Been in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"I am proud of the fact that I was with you in such an important period for the formation of independent Armenia," said French Ambassador to Armenia Michele Legras during his farewell meeting with Chairman of the National Assembly Armen Khachatrian on Tuesday.

Michele Legras fulfilled his diplomatic mission in Armenia and is going to work as French Ambassador to China in January.

The Parliament’s Public Relations Department quoted Armen Khachatrian as saying that Ambassador Legras carried out his diplomatic mission to its fullest capabilities and greatly contributed to the strengthening of political and economic relations between the two countries.

The National Assembly speaker emphasized France’s assistance in Armenia’s membership into the Council of Europe and the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the French Senate.

"The French Senate made the morally right decision–giving preference to the human moral values against a strong and powerful opposition," said Khachatrian. He also acknowledged France’s contribution to ensuring a fair settlement of the Karabakh conflict within the OSCE Minsk Group. Khachatrian also said that the meetings of the Parliament Speakers of the South Caucuses countries organized by Christian Poncelet helped strengthen peace and stability in the region.

He praised the level of the Armenian-French political relations and said he hopes to see the trade and economic relations reach the same level–mentioning that Armenia gives political and economic guarantees for investmen’s and economic development.

Michele Legras said that he is sorry to leave Armenia. Reminiscing about his five-year mission in Armenia–he said that he established close links with the Parliament especially during the last two years.

The Ambassador agreed that the trade and economic relations between Armenia and France need to develop further–however–expressed confidence that his successor will help ensure a greater economic bilateralism.

According to the Ambassador–his successor will also have a chance to witness the Karabakh conflict resolution process and hopefully he or she will be able to bring fresh insight into the peace process.

Lastly–Legras emphasized the importance of deepening the Armenian-French inter-Parliamentary relations.
