Aliyev Threatens Ban On Independent Media

BAKU (Armenpress)–Leaders of many media outlets–journalist’s organizations–lawyers and civil rights activists in Azerbaijan are extremely concerned over the dire situation of the country’s independent media–according to the Baku-based 525 Gazet.

Editor-in-chief of Yeni Musavat daily–Rauf Arifoglu–was quoted by the paper as saying that the authorities not only want to close down three opposition newspapers-Yeni Musavat–Azadliq and Hurriyyat-but they also want to eliminate the entire independent press in Azerbaijan.

He said that President Haydar Aliyev’s critical commen’s at the recent meeting of the New Azerbaijan Party were not unintentional. Following the commen’s–journalist threatened to seek political asylum abroad if the authorities close the newspapers down.

Director of Turan news agency–Mehman Aliyev–said that the elimination of Azerbaijan’s independent media will seriously damage the country’s national security.

The journalists plan to organize a protest against Aliyev’s dictatorial actions within the coming days.
