British Airways Plans Holiday Dinner for Orphans

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Two thousand deprived children in Armenia will enjoy a Christmas celebration–thanks to the generosity of British Airway customers and to the efforts of British Airways and British Mediterranean Airways staff–as well as travel agents in Armenia.

The campaign–promoted by the "World Vision" charity–hopes to raise $3,000 to pay for a Christmas dinner–music–games and gifts for the Armenian children.

British Airways sales representatives and travel agents who sell British Airways tickets asked passengers to donate $2 with each ticket they purchase.

The effort also included placing collecting boxes at the Yerevan Airport and at British Airways offices.

One British Airways client donated $100. The funds raised will be used to provide Christmas treats for children–from Armenia’s second largest city–Gyumri–who live in orphanages or are mentally or physically handicapped.

British Airways employees also donated money–and employees of British Mediterranean Airways which operates the Armenia-London route–donated clothes–toys and sweets for Armenian orphanages. Dougie Douglas–the Commercial Manager for Armenia–Georgia–Khyrgizia and Turkmen’stan–said–"We are really delighted to have the opportunity to raise these funds for such a deserving cause."

The employees have taken this mission to heart–and continue to do their best to see that the intended amount of funds are raised. "We are also particularly grateful to the travel agents for their help in the efforts to provide the Christmas dinner."

The employees of British Airways will support another World Vision project aimed at providing all children in Gyumri schools with lunches throughout the winter after completing their current project. British Airways Armenia also hopes to provide a soup kitchen for the children of Gyumri on the weekends–making sure vegetables are purchased from the local region–thereby supporting the local economy.
