Azeri Defense Minister German Envoy Discuss Karabakh Conflict

BAKU (Armenpress)–Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev was quoted by Turan news agency as saying that "neither war nor peace" is satisfactory for Azerbaijan. Nabiyev made this comment during a meeting with the Germany’s envoy Klaus Grewlich.

Abiyev described the OSCE Minsk Group’s view that the Azeri and Armenian president should reach agreement themselves as "erroneous." He believes that there is a need for a declaration of principles to settle the conflict.

The international community should clearly acknowledge Armenia as the aggressor–demand that the four UN Security Council resolutions are implemented–and should return the occupied lands to Azerbaijan–Abiyev said.

In turn–Grewlich noted that Germany supported Azerbaijan’s position in the international arena and advocated the restoration of the country’s territorial integrity.

The envoy said that his country understood how dangerous the conflict was for the region and wanted a peaceful resolution of the problem. The envoy said that international organizations should make a legal assessment of the conflict and "call things by their proper names." Germany–he added–understands Azerbaijan’s problem very well–given that it itself was under occupation in the past.
