Georgian Parliament Member Urges Recall of PACE Delegation Leader

TBILISI (Armenpress)–A member of Georgian parliament Guram Sharadze insists that the leader of the Georgian delegation to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE)–Lana Gogoberidze–must be recalled.

Sharadze argues that Gogoberidze should be recalled as the head of the Georgian delegation to PACE–because she signed the agreement on the return of Meskhetian Turks to Georgia "without the parliament’s approval."

Sharadze says that the return of Meskhetian Turks who were deported from Georgia’s southern region of Samtskhe-Dzhavakheti to Central Asia and Kazakhstan in 1944 by Stalin’s regime–should be implemented gradually.

According to Sharadze–Armenia is also concerned with possible return of Meskhetian Turks to Samtskhe-Dzhavakheti–a region with predominant Armenian population.

The speaker of Georgian parliament Nino Burzhanadze said that Georgia could not begin the mass repatriation Meskhetian Turks–until the refugees from Abkhazia–South Osetia and even Chechnya are settled in different Georgian regions.

According to Burjanadze–the resettlement of Meskhetian Turks in Samtskhe-Dzhavakheti region may cause ethnic clashes in south Georgia.

Return of the Meskhetian Turks will become possible only when done in several stages. They must also be settled in different regions in Georgia–Burjanadze said. "Even if PACE threatens to expel Georgia from the Council of Europe–Georgia will continue to take its diplomatic actions guided only by our national interests," she said.
