Ghoukassian Calls for International Recognition of Karabakh

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A wide range of questions regarding the socio-economic and socio-political spheres of Karabakh were discussed during a meeting between Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian and National Liberal Union (NLU) members and chairman Seyran Avagian on Wednesday. The focal point of the meeting was the Karabakh conflict settlement.

According to the acting press secretary of the president of Karabakh–Ghoukassian stressed that Nagorno Karabakh is an independent military-political unit–a factor that has to be taken into account during negotiations about the conflict settlement. He said that if Azerbaijan intends to continue hostilities and hinder the current peace–Karabakh is capable of and will solve its problems by itself.

Ghoukassian said the fact that Karabakh still remains unrecognized is the main problem hindering the successful realization of socio-economic tasks–and why Karabakh has not and cannot receive any aid from international financial structures. However–Karabakh government officials tried to establish unconventional ways to develop its economic complex. Government authorities would also like to see private foreign investmen’s in the economic system of the republic. To provide efficient and favorable climate for direct foreign investmen’s in the independent republic–Karabakh parliamentarians already created corresponding legislation.

Ghoukassian also told the guests how important it was to create a full political arena in Artsakh–as well as to boost all political organizations within the republic.

He was hopeful that politicians from Armenia will visit Karabakh more often–so they could have a closer look at the true state of affairs in the republic.

Chairman Seyran Avagian stated that the activities of their organization are mainly directed at Artsakh. NLU work towards regulating the mechanism for a more active cooperation with party organizations of Karabakh–and gradually raising the level of cooperation among them.
