Union of Armenian Youth of Georgia Elects New Board Chairman

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The third general meeting of the Union of Armenian Youth of Georgia took place on December 23. New board members and a new chairman–22-year-old Mikhail Avagiants–the Union’s Secretary General for three years–were elected. Over 100 UAYG members attended the meeting.

In 1996–the Union had only 20 members–and today–there are over 800. In five years since its inception–the Union advocated and worked toward the protection of the rights of the youth. They also consolidated links with other youth organizations in Georgia and abroad–and they helped revive the Armenian traditions and values to preserve and further development their culture.

The participants in the meeting pointed out the necessity of establishing closer relations with the representatives of other ethnic minorities in Georgia–and they discussed the Samkhtse-Javakhet problem.
