Tabourians Donate $1 Million to Catholicosate

ANTELIAS–Lebanon–The Secretariat of the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia announces with gratification a donation of $1 million by Mr. and Mrs. Andr Tabourian. Tabourian–a former member of the Parliament in Lebanon and the current Chairman of the Central Committee of the Catholicosate–has donated this money in response to His Holiness Aram I’s request for funds to promote projects needed by the Catholicosate.

This generous donation will fund the following projects: Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars will be used for the construction and furnishing of two residences–one for the bishops and the other for the priests.

The new residence for the priests–which will replace the old Seminary–will be dedicated to the memory of Catholicos Karekin II of Cilicia–who studied and served therein. T

he second building will be dedicated to the memory of Dr. and Mrs. Karekin and Fimi Tabourian–the parents of the benefactor.

One hundred and fifty thousand dollars will serve as the basis for the creation of a special Endowment Fund to strengthen the mission of the Catholicosate through religious education–cultural and social projects. The fund will be managed by a special committee–which will have its own by-laws and will be presided by His Holiness Aram I. It is the hope of His Holiness Aram I that the creation of this Endowment Fund will encourage other donors to support the vocation of the centuries-old Catholicosate of Cilicia in witnessing its Christian faith and serving the Armenian people.

Welcoming this gesture by Andr Tabourian–His Holiness Aram I said: "Today–through this noble donation to his church–Mr. Tabourian is sharing the fruit of his fifty years of honest work. Mr. Tabourian’s decision reflects his responsible attitude towards the Armenian Church and the people in the Diaspora–and his firm commitment to the role of Catholicosate of Cilicia. We pray that this exemplary gesture will resonate in the hearts and minds of other benefactors and that they will respond to the needs of the Church and the people in a similar way".

This important donation crowns the many and varied contributions that Tabourian has made to the Catholicosate–to the Prelacy in Lebanon and to other cultural and social institutions.

His Holiness Aram I highly appreciates the contribution of Andr and Nina Tabourian to the Catholicosate of Cilicia.

The official blessing and opening of the buildings will take place in 2002–during the meeting of the National Assembly of the Catholicosate of Cilicia.
