Melkoumian Discusses Legal Status of Karabakh

KARABAKH (Karabakh News and Information Center)–Karabakh Foreign Minister Naira Melkoumian met with the Union of Veterans of War and Labor of Nagorno-Karabakh on January 9. The meeting was organized by the executive council of the organization.

Melkoumian updated those present on the current state of the negotiation process on the Karabakh settlement and the authorities’ diplomatic efforts to get international nations to fully recognize the republic’s independence. As the Minister noted–currently the diplomatic efforts must be aimed at achieving a legal settlement of the conflict. At that–Melkoumian emphasized that the position of Nagorno-Karabakh–which declared its independence in strict conformity with both the Soviet legislation–which was in power at that time–and international law–is irreproachable.

The organization’s representatives expressed their anxiety which they say is caused by Azerbaijan’s frequent threats to start a war. The foreign minister noted that the Defense Army of Nagorno-Karabakh is capable of preventing any infringement on the security of the Republic and its people. At the same time–she underlined that the restraint and constructivism of the Karabakh party were regarded positively in the world–while Azerbaijan’s aggressive position received a corresponding evaluation from the international community.

Numerous issues–including regional relations–changes in the world after the terrorist attacks in the US–and Azerbaijan’s contacts with the terrorist organizations–as well as the post-war restoration of Karabakh and solution of social problems were discussed at the meeting.
