No Alliance Formed Between ADL ARF

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Following a meeting between senior members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) and the Armenian Democratic Liberal party (ADL) on January 10–senior ARF member Armen Rustamian said it was too early to speak about an alliance between the two parties.

Rustamian said the ARF was planning meetings with officials from other parties as well–including officials from political parties not represented in the parliament. Rustamian said the ARF emphasized the six principles: rehabilitation of the political system–social-economic issues–struggle against shadow economy–October 27 trial–Nagorno Karabakh conflict resolution and foreign policy orientation.

The chairman of the ADL Ruben Mirzakhanian said that there are commonalties between the two parties–stressing that both have been pursuing the Armenian Cause for more than a century. According to Mirzakhanian–despite the commonalties–ARF and ADL have different ideologies. "We (the ADL) are liberal democrats–the ARF members are supporters of social revolutionary ideology–and neither the ARF nor the ADL is going to change their ideologies. But despite this ideological difference–the two parties are interested in the one and same problem- radical improvement of the country’s political system," Mirzakhanian commented.

In his words–political parties are a mandatory component of any political system–but the Armenian parties are still far from meeting the standards of developed political parties. Regarding the formation of an alliance–Mirzakhanian said that a political alliance is enough to come up with the same program. "This is not possible in the parliament elections," Mirzakhanian said–but added that the two parties might cooperate in supporting another candidate. He cited the 1998 pre-term presidential elections–when both the ARF and ADL supported Robert Kocharian. "We have already announced that the ADL will support the re-election of President Kocharian in 2003," Mirzakhanian said.
