Four Armenian Weightlifters Banned After Positive Drug Results

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Weightlifting Federation President Ogsen Mirzoyan has departed for the Hungarian capital Budapest–where the headquarters of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) are located. Mirzoyan will talk about the decision the IWF has taken after the Armenian weightlifters tested positive for drugs at the world championships in Turkey. Two Armenian weightlifters have been suspended for life–and two others have been suspended for two years.

Two of the lifters were also stripped of the silver medals they won at the championships in Antalya–Turkey in November.

Gagik Khachatrian–who won silver in the 85-kilogram class in Turkey–and Hakob Pilosian–fourth-place finisher in the 94-kg division–received life bans because these were their second violations.

Arsen Melikian–silver medalist in the 77-kg class–and Rafik Chakhoyan–who competed in the 105-kg division received two-year bans. Melikian was also stripped of his silver medal.

The Armenian Weightlifting Federation itself was suspended for a year. Under international federation rules–a national body is suspended if it has three violations in a 12-month period.

IWF President Tamas Ayan was quoted by Armenian newspapers as saying that the IWF ban was final and is not subject to revision.
