Aliyev Against Extending President’s Term

BAKU (Armenpress)–Azerbaijan’s president’s public relations department said that the Haydar Aliyev was opposed to the suggestion by the Yeni Azeri political party to extend the president’s term from five to seven years.

"Aliyev believes there is no need to change the constitution," said his public relations department. The next presidential elections in Azerbaijan will take place in the spring of 2003.

Aliyev flew from New York to Cleveland for medical tests. He was in New York to participate in the World Economic Forum.

Aliyev had a heart bypass surgery in 1999 in Cleveland–Ohio. He underwent tests in a clinic in Cleveland two years ago and was treated for a severe flu.

Before returning to Azerbaijan–Aliyev will meet with US Vice-President Dick Cheney in Washington.
