UK House of Commons Leader Invited to Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian Parliament Speaker Armen Khachatrian met with Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Timothy Jones on February 7 to discuss a number of urgent issues concerning Armenian-British political–economic–cultural and scientific cooperation.

The Parliamentary Public Relations Department reported that Armen Khachatrian expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador for his January visit to Britain invited by the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Britain considered this visit as a historical visit from the viewpoint of establishing deeper relations between the two countries. Khachatrian emphasized the meetings covered all sections of the power system of Great Britain and was very effective in terms of information and signing agreemen’s. Khachatrian also singled out his meetings with the representatives of the local Armenian community and expressed his gratitude for Britain’s care for them.

Ambassador Timothy Jones pointed out the importance of the official visit for the relations between the two countries which will result in deeper political as well as trade and economic relations.

He said that the third Republic of Armenia is a comparatively new state but it already has its own traditions–which is very important for a state. Jones also emphasized the importance of the visit in the aspect that in his country donor organizations usually coordinate their activities with the government and henceforth they will have a clear idea of the fact that Armenia has sufficient conditions for investmen’s. He also added that London is an important financial center–and that meetings with the European Reconstruction and Development Bank may be effective.

Parliament Speaker Khachatrian also invited the Chairman of the British House of Commons and the British International Cooperation Group to make an official visit to Armenia.
