Pilibos Students Take 1st Place at Decathlon

LOS ANGELES–Students from the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School placed first in their division and third place in the overall competition during the California Private Schools Academic Decathlon over the last weekend–making it the sixth consecutive year that the school has garnered such success at this event.

Participants–Antranig Hindoyan–Amir Kassoua–Liza Baronian–Raffi Babian–Haig Hagopian–Lilit Sadoyan–Hampig Tangazian–Marita Medzachian and Haig Khodigian had been preparing for this annual academic competition for months.

The students tested their knowledge in 10 categories such as public speaking–interviewing–art–music–economics–literature–writing and general knowledge.

The Pilibos contingent won 46 medals–20 gold–14 silver and 12 bronze–walking away with the most medals in the overall competition–despite its third-place win for the entire event.

"We are extremely proud of the accomplishmen’s of our students–because every year our results only improve and the difference between other teams in the same division wanes," commented Pilibos principal Viken Yacoubian–explaining that other schools competing in the Decathlon have far more students than Pilibos–thus allowing them more of an opportunity to chose from a larger number of students and take part in the competition with more than one team.

Furthermore–Yacoubian explained–that the faculty members who train the students–do so on a voluntary basis.

"The continuous success the school has achieved at the Decathlon is a reflection of our school’s curriculum and academic program–as well as the emphasized discipline and hard work by the students," added Yacoubian.

Decathlon coach and veteran Pilibos teacher Jacquie Mischler echoed Yacoubian’s sentimen’s–saying "I am proud of the participating students. They competed and won against schools whose numbers far exceed ours and at the end with only a 5000 point difference."

Yacoubian also commended all faculty members who diligently worked to coach and prepare this year’s winning team.
