Armenia Unveils Preliminary Census Results

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–The population of Armenia has shrunk by almost one quarter over the past decade and is now just over three million–according to the preliminary results of the census conducted last October.

The figures were released today by the Armenian government’s statistics department. The head of the department–Stepan Mnatsakanian–said some 900,000 Armenian nationals have out-migrated from the country since the Soviet collapse in the face of worsening living conditions. He said only half of them could be covered by the census.

Most of the migran’s are thought to be living in Russia on a permanent or temporary basis.

The out-migration has largely resulted from a drastic fall in living standards in the early 1990s.
