Unofficial Meeting of CIS Leaders A Success

ALMA-ATA (Armenpress)–The non-official meeting of CIS countries’ leaders began on March 1. The presidents of all member countries of CIS–except the Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev–participated in the meeting–which lasted for more than two hours. Afterward–during the press conference–Russian President Vladimir Putin presented the framework of discussed issues.

"Though the meeting was not official–very serious issues concerning the cooperation between the countries of CIS were discussed," said President Putin. The Russian leader said aside from political issues within the framework of CIS–the meeting discussed issues on fighting international terrorism–the unification of all CIS countries’ efforts in this direction–and activation of their participation in actions of international coalition. It was underlined that the military phase is coming to an end and CIS must support the establishment of normal life in Afghanistan.

The meeting participants approved the efforts of Moldova to settle down the inner political contradictions. According to Putin–the position of the president of Moldova and his efforts are directed towards establishing of peace–security and stability.

On the initiative of the Ukrainian president–the pre-election situation in Ukraine was discussed. An agreement was reached to send observers to Ukraine from various CIS countries.

Within the framework of the unofficial meeting–the leaders held many private conversations during which they discussed cooperation in various spheres.

A meeting of the presidents of Kazakhstan–Russia–Turkmen’stan and Uzbekistan was held. During this meeting an agreement was reached to cooperate in the spheres of energy and gas supply.

Armenian President Robert Kocharian and Safarmurat Niyazov discussed issues concerning the visit of the latter to Armenia were discussed. Kocharian also met with Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and discussed economic issues as well as political issues concerning the Caucasian region.

President Kocharian also met with President Putin. The sides discussed regional–economic issues and the results of the present unofficial forum. Particular importance was attached to the activation of Armenian-Russian interstate commission’s work–and the realization of signed agreemen’s. Meetings with the participation of Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian were also planned. Oskanian met with his counterparts from Uzbekistan and Moldova. Issues on preparation of Oskanian’s visits to these countries were discussed during these meetings.
