Armenian Nationals Security Ministry Denies Azeri Allegations

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian ministry of national security issued a press release on March 6 that adamantly denies allegations by Azerbaijani special services that claim that the territories controlled by the defense army of Nagorno Karabakh are being used for drag trafficking.

The press release states: "Neither the territory of Armenia–nor the territory of Nagorno Karabakh have ever been used for drug trafficking. These rumors are spread by the intelligence services of Azerbaijan."

US cochairman of the OSCE Minsk Group Rudolf Perina has also rejected reports that the territory controlled by the liberation army of Nagorno Karabakh might be used for drug trafficking.

At his meeting with representatives of the Western representative office of the Armenian Assembly of America–the US diplomat said that the reports on the Internet "are not official information by the US State Department–but only reports obtained from other sources". Perina assured that this problem will be examined and solved.

According to information published by Azerbaijani sources quoting the US State Department–Washington gives considerable importance to the geographical location of Armenia as a potential subject in international drug trade. In this regard–these reports supposedly said that territories controlled by the liberation army of Karabakh were allegedly used as a transit point for drug trafficking–while Iran–Lebanon and Russia were cited as the main partners of the Armenian drug traffickers.

It is noteworthy that the US State Department in its annual report did not include Armenia in the list of narcotics-producing countries.
