Politician Warns Georgia May Become Target for Muslim Countries

TBILISI (Armenpress)–Georgian President Edward Shevardnadze on Monday said Georgia might ask for US aid to carry out an anti-terrorist operation in the volatile Pankisi gorge–which is reportedly sheltering hundreds of Chechen separatists and members of criminal groupings.

In an interview with the Rustavi-2 TV channel–Shevardnadze said Georgia must be ready to protect its sovereignty and independence. He said–"In this case there might be no need to ask for US aid."

In the meantime–the leader of People’s Front Nodar Natadze warned against giving any military facility in Georgia to the US for striking against Iraq. "Georgia may become a target for the entire Muslim world if a US fighter takes off from Georgia to strike against Iraq," he said in a news conference in Tbilisi.

Natadze also said he welcomes US military presence in Georgia. He said–"In the face of US we shall have a powerful ally to withstand Russia’s aggression against our country."
