Khachatrian Assad Discuss Gateway to Mediterranean

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The delegation of the Armenian National Assembly held meetings with the president–prime minister–parliament speaker and the representatives of the Armenian community of Syria during its March 4-8 visit. At a March 11 news conference–Armenian Parliament Speaker Armen Khachatrian said the visit of the Armenian deputies was not completely political–since a number of agreemen’s on practical problems were reached during the visit.

In particular–the delegation discussed the issue of providing a gateway for Armenia to the Mediterranean Sea via the territory of Syria with Syrian President Bishar-Al-Asad. According to the agreement signed between Syria and Turkey in 1993–these countries may use each other’s territories for transportation and President Asad promised to use their improving relations with Turkey for Armenia to be able to transport its cargoes to Syria via the territory of Turkey.

During a meeting with Chairman of the Syrian National Assembly Abd-Al-Kader and the Armenian delegation–the sides confirmed the necessity for developing relations between the two parliamen’s.

The sides also discussed the mutual assistance on foreign policy issues–cooperation in the sphere of culture–education and science.

Meeting with the vice-president and prime minister of Syria–the delegation discussed the creation of new joint ventures and enlargement of trade and economic relations between Armenia and Syria.
