Ferrahian Students Get High Awards at Model UN

ENCINO–During the past few months–Ferrahian School students have participated in several academic competitions with excellent outcome. The close-knit collaboration of our diligent and hard-working students and the faculty members along with the dedicated and compassionate school atmosphere has brought about such success.

Gavel Award – One of the highest awards within the UC-Berkeley Model UN simulation contests

Last weekend–March 8 to 10–Ferrahian Students participated in the Model UN Annual Conference. This year’s conference marked the 50th Anniversary of the Berkeley Model United Nations Conference. The participants of this conference include students from 73 different high schools totaling to more than 1500 students.

At this conference–participating schools represent one or more United Nations member countries and the delegates discuss and converse about social and political issues affecting humanity throughout the world. Ferrahian School teams were pre-assigned to represent Armenia–Cameroon–Ethiopia and Norway. Among the California Secondary School participants–we are pleased to report that the Ferrahian School "diplomats" were highly recognized for taking part in this program and we are honored to report they won prestigious awards. Student Seepan Parseghian–once again–in addition to winning the UCLA Model UN award last November–won the International Court of Justice Gavel Award at this conference. Undoubtedly–Seepan Parseghian is now a leader amongst the brightest young politicians around and a top "diplomat".

Eleventh grade students Talar Derderian and Talar Kivork won a special prize for their exceptional presentation and research on Child Pornography and International Child Adoption topics.

First Prize at the Science Bowl hands-on building contest

On February 23 the Ferrahian School students participated in a Science Bowl organized by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The winners of this contest head to Washington DC to participate in the US Department of Energy National Science Bowl competition. Morethan 200 students comprised of 42 teams from 25 schools participated in this contest. The contest is science-based and covers physics–chemistry–biology–engineering and technology subjects. The following students were part of the two teams from Ferrahian:

First Team Participants: Anahit Galstyan–Hrayr Khanjian–Vahan Koshkarian–Seepan Persesghian–and Shirag Shemmassian.

Second Team Participants: Ari-Hovig Ishkhanian–Talin Karagozian–Alidz Talatinian–Terenig Topjian–Annie Voskertchian.

The team from North Hollywood school won the Los Angeles regional competition. For the second year in a row–Ferrahian school won the first prize in the hands-on building contest. The winners–Ferrahian Team #2 participants–received the Gas Company scholarship of $1,000 each–as well as $100 gift cards.

Second Place in the Academic Decathlon Division 2

On Saturday–February 3–Ferrahian School students participated in the Los Angeles private school Academic Decathlon competition and won second place in Division 2. Students from 15 schools representing 17 teams participated in this program; they were divided into 3 subdivisions.

The following students participated from Ferrahian: Raffi Semerdjian–Stephen Keoseian–Jack Karagulleyan–Ari-Hovig Ishkhanian–Hrayr Khanjian–Talar Kivork–Anahit Galstyan–Seepan Parseghian–and Vahan Koshkarian.

Perfect score in Mathematics in SAT

Since October of the current scholastic year–Ferrahian School students have participated in Scholastic Aptitude Tests I and II. SAT tests are part of the requiremen’s in the university and 4-year college application process.

The administration is pleased to report that our students have had exceptional success with student Ari-Hovig Ishkhanian registering a perfect score of 800 points in SAT I mathematics.

The following students were above the 90-percentile rank in overall mathematics subjects:

University and college acceptance is a yardstick by which the success of a school is measured. The school administration is pleased to report that 36 students out of 38 applicants have been accepted at California State University–Northridge (CSUN).

The administration expressed confidence that the school will receive impressive results as well from other universities and 4-year colleges for the entire 57 senior class students.

The Administration of Ferrahian School–as part of its overall mission–recognizes the importance and the need for our students to interact with peers of Armenian and non-Armenian schools alike.

Therefore–the school makes every effort to encourage students to participate in large numbers in academic and sports competitions that are available and challenging.

Contributions and Donations To Ferrahian

Throughout the year–Ferrahian School receives generous contributions and donations from its alumni–local community sponsors–community organizations–individuals–and other resources. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all our donors.

John Tashjian – $ 1,716 in collaboration with Washington Mutual for funds realized from new membership drive project

Alice Ekchian – $1,000 for "Garo Madenlian" memorial science laboratory fund

Preschool and Elementary School Parents – $1,000 for North Hills campus parking lot resurfacing

Donation – $860 in memory of late Arthur Nalbandian

Vatche Shirvanian – Alumnus – $600 through matching funds from Cal Fed for a total of $2450

Shant Tchakerian from Seattle – $190 through matching donation via Microsoft /United Way.

Target Stores – $200 through "Ferrahian" designated purchases by consumers

Robert Arshagouni – Alumnus – A restored HP printer in good condition

David and Salpie Kovacs – Parents – A bookcase for the First Grade classroom
