Rumsfeld to Meet Armenia Defense Minister in DC

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Armenian Defense Minister Serge Sarkisian will meet Wednesday with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the third day of his official visit to the United States–the Pentagon announced on Tuesday.

A Pentagon statement said Rumsfeld will host an honor cordon to welcome Sarkisian. The ceremony will take place on the steps of the Pentagon River Entrance. Sarkisian and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz will hold a joint press conference afterwards.

The talks which are expected to focus on bilateral military ties. Sarkisian told Armenian reporters over the weekend that he will discuss with US defense officials "the start and continuation of Armenian-American military cooperation."

He started the trip on Monday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the site of the World Trade Center in New York which was destroyed by the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Sarkisian will hold separate meetings on Friday with Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage and Stephen Hadley–deputy director of the National Security Council. He is also scheduled to visit the National Defense University in Washington.
