Russian Speaker Proposes New Model for Relationship Building

ST. PETERSBURG (Armenpress)–Parliament speakers from the so-called "Caucasian Four" (Armenia–Azerbaijan–Georgia and Russia) centered on regional transport situation and development of parliamentary ties between the legislators of the four Caucasian countries on the sidelines of a CIS parliamentary assembly meeting in St. Petersburg on March 26.

The issue of lifting the blockade of regional railways was also discussed. Speaker of the Russian State Duma Genadiy Seleznev was quoted by Itar-Tass saying that a section of railway running from the Russian Veseloye station to the Georgian Samtredia station–which passes across the breakaway region of Abkhazia–was the main focus of the discussions.

The route was traditionally used for shipping goods from Russia to Turkey and Iran across Georgia and Armenia. In 1994–the council of CIS government heads approved a plan for restoration of that section of the railroad but being linked to Abkhazia was a problem and it failed to be realized.

Seleznev proposed a new model for building their relationship–which he called "from confidence to cooperation–from cooperation to reconciliation and regulation".
