State Dpt. Believes Azerbaijan Transits Drugs

YEREVAN (Arminfo)–According to the US State Department’s report on international anti-drug operations–Azerbaijan’s territory is used for the drug transit from Middle Asia to Europe.

Azerbaijan is believed to be "a key transit point" for drug flows from Afghanistan–Middle Asia and Iran to Russia and West Europe. Azerbaijan is also reported as intensifying its attempts to grow drugs though no large-scale cultivation is observed there.

Some 15,000 Azeris are reported to use drugs. Azerbaijan is also mentioned in connection with the drug situation in Russia. US experts believe Azeri–Chechen and Tajik groups to be key heroine dealers in Russia.

On the other hand–sources in Baku claim that it’s Armenia that is used as a transit country for drug flows from Iran and Turkey to Russia and Ukraine.
