USDA Marketing Assistance Project Gran’s $300 000 to Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)-According to the "Applied Research" subprogram of the US Department of Agriculture Marketing Assistance Project (USDA MAP)–a $300,000 grant has been allocated to Armenian scientists and farmers for 2002. The purpose of the subprogram is carrying out research in the sphere of agriculture and using the results in the production of agricultural products.

According to Charles Basham–the coordinator of the subprogram–the program consists of three parts. A $160,000 grant will be given to the first division of 25 scientists–who submitted applications in response to invitations addressed to Armenian agricultural scientific organizations by the USDA MAP. The second division is will receive $15,000–for the four groups carrying out the "integrated struggle" against pests. The subprogram’s third division will receive $180,000–and the USDA MAP will allocate $72,000–and allocations from the World Bank (WB) and local farmers in the order of co-financing will make 20 and 40 percent out of the total sum.
