Rustamian Says Javakhk Deman’s Are Legitimate

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"The demand of the Georgian Armenia’s for autonomy is legitimate and has nothing to do with separatism," said Representative of the ARF Executive Council Armen Rustamian–commenting on the demand of the Armenian "Virk" political organization to grant an autonomy to Javakhk (Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region) addressed to the Georgian authorities.

"A solution to the Javakhk problem should proceed from the fact that Georgia–according to its Constitution–is a federal state. So–I don’t think that the demand of the Armenia’s of Javakhk on creating a separate administrative unit within Georgia should be treated painfully," Rustamian said. He emphasized that the matter concerns the autonomy within Georgia rather than separatism.

The ARF Executive Council representative expressed confidence that the questions raised by the Georgian Armenia’s must be discussed and solved within Georgia only. "No action orprocess connected with the problems of the Georgian Armenia’s should be observed on Armenia’s part. We must do our utmost to keep their fair demand in the center of our attention so that the security of our compatriots might not be jeopardized and for their rights to be protected within the framework of the obligations Georgia assumed as a state when entering the Council of Europe," Rustamian stated. He emphasized that the political forces of Armenia must welcome any decision reached in the atmosphere of mutual accord within Georgia.
