Kocharian’s Message Delivered to Khatami

TEHRAN (Armenpress)–The Iranian IRNA news agency reported that Head of Iran-Armenia Joint Economic Commission Artashes Tumanyan met President Khatami May 6 to submit a written message from Armenian President Robert Kocharian.

Khatami was quoted saying that Tehran and Yerevan should boost bilateral relations given their common goals and available potentials. He stressed that the promotion of Iran-Armenian relations would never harm a third country.

Khatami said the two countries have to maintain their good relations given their proximity and common views on several regional and international issues. Such relations–he stressed–would be beneficial to secure the regional peace and stability. Khatami further highlighted the need to strengthen the Iran-Armenian Joint Economic Commission and to make the agreemen’s earlier signed between the two countries in various enterprises operational.

The Iranian president recalled the project to transfer Iranian gas to Armenia–and hoped the preliminaries of the project–as well as those of the tripartite cooperation of Iran–Armenia and Greece to transfer Iranian gas to Europe would be soon prepared. Khatami further voiced Iran’s readiness to pipe Turkmen gas to Armenia through Iranian territory.

Khatami stressed that Iran always advocated peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Iranian president appreciated the invitation extended by his Armenian counterpart Kocharian to visit Yerevan–and said he would visit the country at an appropriate time.

Tumanyan–for his part–said Iran had a significant role in reinforcing regional peace and stability–and voiced the interest of Armenian officials to boost ties with the Islamic republic. He said he had had constructive talks with Iranian officials–and stressed making the agreemen’s signed between the two countries in different enterprises operational.
