AKHALKALAK (Armenpress)–An Armenian member of the Georgian parliament Melik Raisian–elected from Akhalkalak–a region with predominantly Armenian population–Saturday reiterated the region’s population’s concerns regarding the future of the Russian military base deployed there.
In an interview with local A-Info news agency Raisian argued that the base should remain in Akhalkalak as it not only provides jobs to several thousand local residents but also guarantees their security.
Raisian said that Georgia’s borders with neighboring Turkey are not properly protected and there have been many cases of border violations from Turkey. He warned that in case of an emergency the local Armenia’s would be the first to be effected.
Raisian expressed hope that the leaders of Russia and Georgia will find a solution to this alarming issue.
