European Armenian Federation Meets With Oskanian

BRUSSLES–The European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy Wednesday met with Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian to discuss a range of issues of mutual concern to Armenia and the European Armenian community.

Foreign Minister Oskanian was joined by Armenian Ambassador to the European Union–Vicken Tchitedjian–Foreign Ministry desk officer for Council of Europe matters–Lilith Daneghian and several Armenian Embassy staff.

European Armenian Federation Chairwoman Hilda Tchoboian–Executive Director Laurent Leylekian and Communications Director Talline Tachdjian hosted the reception–held at the Brussels headquarters of the Federation. Also in attendance were Nicolas Tavitian of the Forum of the Armenian Associations of Europe as well as several Armenian community leaders–including ARF Belgium representative–Daron Garabedian and Mrs. Anne-Marie Mouradian from the Armenian community of Belgium.

Oskanian noted the important role of European Armenian organizations play in working with the various institutions of the European Union. He emphasized the necessity for close coordination between Diasporan Armenian groups and Armenia–stressing that mutual issues of interest have to go beyond the traditional concerns of the Armenian communities.

The European Armenian Federation and other participants agreed that relations with the EU and efforts to increase public awareness of Armenian issues need to be stepped up–especially because of the emergence of a misinformation campaign and networks in the area. The European Armenian Federation also expressed its hope to see the European Armenian community work more closely with Armenia in efforts to establish peace in the Caucasus.

Finally–the Diasporan community representatives at the meeting unanimously called for the strengthening of European principles in Armenia–noting their commitment to ensuring a pro-Europe sentiment in the country. They also urged Armenia to more clearly asserts its European vocation in the international arena.
