Akhalkalak Election Results Finalized

AKHALKALAK–Javakhk (A-Info)–Georgia’s Central Electoral Commission finally approved the results of local government elections in Akhalkalak–which was the scene of contentious elections on June 2.

Regional Executive chairman Artush Hambartsoumyan and his faction won the elections–despite claims by opposing candidates that the vote was allegedly fraudulent. The Georgian CEC–however–has rejected claims of fraud.

All local government election results have been finalized and now Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze–who was dealt a blow in this vote–must appoint chairmen of regional executive councils.

In addition to Hambartsoumyan–Okro Okroyan and Georgian parliament member Hamlet Movsisyan are rumored to be the top candidates for the presidential appointment.

In the Ninodzminda Armenian-populated region of Javakhk–former regional executive chairman Rafik Arzoumanyan–the adviser to Georgian parliament member Henzel Mkoyan–Sevak Yeran’syan and Roubik Maghdesyan are favored to become presidential appointees.
