Italy’s Consul to Armenia Awarded Medal of Gratitude

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Italy’s consul to Armenia Antonio Montalto was awarded one of highest awards of his country- the Medal of Gratitude Congregation. The award was handed over by Italy’s ambassador to Armenia Paolo Andrea Trabalza last week.

Montalto first arrived in Yerevan in 1988 in the wake of a devastating Spitak earthquake and since then he has been leading various humanitarian programs–all aimed to ease the housing–economic and social conditions of thousands of people who lost their beloved and their homes.

After commemorating the memory of 25,000 victims claimed by the earthquake on Saturday–Ambassador Trabalza handed the medal to Montalto saying that the Italian president had accepted the proposal to admit the consul into the ran’s of the honored knights of the Congregation taking his selfless service to Armenia into account.

Montalto’s contributions have been especially extensive in the health sector. He has done a great deal of work in implementation of projects aiming at improvement of reproductive health of Armenian women by helping the repair of a maternity home in Artik–an obstetrics and gynecology department at Maralik hospital. Montalto has also established of ties between medical centers in Rome and Yerevan.

"There are things and desires stemming from one’s own heart which are inexplicable. Such was my desire to come and stay here in Armenia. There are many problems this country is facing but Armenia and its people have become dear to me–" Montalto said.
