High Level Delegations of NATO and Armenia Meet

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A meeting of high-level delegations of NATO and Armenia was held in Brussels on July 4 as part of political consultations with the NATO leadership.

Besides exchanging views on political issues of mutual interest–the participants of the meeting–which was the first in a series–pursued the goal of summarizing the results of Armenia’s participation in NATO’s Partnership for Peace Program and determining new tasks of cooperation.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry’s Public Relations Department reports that it was said in connection with struggle against international terrorism that since the very first day Armenia has rendered assistance to the international coalition and is ready to continue cooperation in this direction.

The importance of the seminar on issues of struggle against international terrorism to be held in Yerevan in October 2002 under the aegis of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council was stressed in this context.

The seminar will be attended by representatives of NATO-member states and partner states.

The process of organization of the "Best Joint Effort – 2003" military exercises and related problems were also presented. The exercises will be held in Armenia next year.

Discussion in the spheres of science–emergency management–as well as information and the press was also discussed.

The high level of cooperation between Armenian scientists and NATO in the sphere of science was pointed out.

The Armenian delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Tatul Margarian. It included Ambassador-Head of the Armenian mission in NATO Vigen Chitechian and Chief of the Head Department for Foreign Relations of the Armenian Ministry of Defense Gen. Mikael Melkonian.

The NATO delegation was led by the deputies to the Secretary General for political and defense planning affairs Ambassador Gunter Altenberg and Dr. Edgar Buckley.
