Attacks in Russia to be Discussed at Conference

MOSCOW (Armenpress)–Russian book-publishing and information minister Andrey Barkovsky was quoted Wednesday by Russian Itar-Tass news agency as saying that the situation in Russian Krasnoarmeisk–where an unsanctioned gathering of local Slavs was held on Tuesday in defense of those residents who were arrested on charges of attacking local Armenian nationals–will be discussed at a special consultation of the governor of Moscow region Boris Gromov.

He said that governor Gromov is aware of the problem but several days will be required to clarify all the facts connected with the incident.

He said it was the first big incident in the region–when the conflict among the young people has acquired a national coloring. "However–such actions can rather be considered as hooliganism than a case of national intolerance," Barkovsky said.

More than 20 Armenia’s were reported to get seriously injured in Krasnoarmeisk where scores of Russian youths went on the rampage for several hours last weekend–breaking into Armenia’s’ houses and sustaining strikes on everyone they suspected of being an Armenian.

According to the witnesses–the victims’ calls for help remained unanswered by the local police for hours.

According to reports from Moscow–the brawl between Armenia’s and Russia’s was caused by a clash at a local bar when a 26-year-old Russian was stabbed by an Armenian national. The latter was immediately arrested by the police.

Meantime another report from Siberian Novosibirsk said a clash involving some fifty people–took place between members of the Armenian community and local Russia’s.

A spokeswoman for Armenian foreign ministry said on July 11 that the incident in Krasnoarmeisk was rather "an act of hooliganism" than an attack motivated by political or ethnic reasons. Dzyunik Aghajanian–the spokeswoman–said the clash had neither political nor ethnic motives.

Several dozens of Armenia’s rallied in front of Russian embassy in Yerevan–protesting–as they said–against "Armenian pogroms."

However–the embassy did not react to the rally.

The protesters accused the Armenian government of inactivity and ignoring mass violations of the rights of Armenia’s in a country which is still perceived as a strategic partner of Armenia.
