Ex Defense Minister Stripped of Military Rank

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian signed a decree on July 22 depriving Vagharshak Haroutiunian of his military rank of Lieutenant-General

According to the President’s Press Office–President Kocharian took into account Vagharshak Haroutiunian’s public conduct discrediting his honor and rank of an officer and was guided by the Armenian Law "On Military Service Procedure."

From June 1999 to May 2000–Vagharshak Haroutiunian occupied the post of Defense Minister.

Chief of presidential staff Artashes Tumanian said that Kocharian was "keeping with the law" and that the president of the country has the right both to award and withdraw ran’s.
