Azerbaijan May Refuse OSCE Mediation

BAKU (Armenpress)–A senior US diplomat has reaffirmed this week that the solution to the long-running opposition between neighboring Azerbaijan and Armenia’should be sought by the presidents of the two countries.

Rudolf Perina–the US co-chairmen in the OSCE Minsk group–was quoted by Voice of America as saying that the Minsk group cannot impose a peace plan on the sides which would not be endorsed by them.

Perina said that the peace deal seemed very close at Key West talks last year–but the sides stepped away from their previous arrangemen’s.

Perina said that Yerevan and Baku will have to exhibit a greater degree of flexibility to reach a genuine solution. Perina said the talks have stalled because none of the conflicting sides demonstrates sufficient will to compromise a solution.

"Both presidents should strive to such a peace that would we accepted by both nations," Perina said.

In related news–representative of Azeri president Rustam Mamedov made a statement saying Azerbaijan may refuse the mediation of the OSCE Minsk group.

President Aliyev–in his statement–said that the OSCE Minsk group is very passive in the Karabakh conflict’s settlement. This statement was not accepted by OSCE Minsk group co-chairmen and Rudolf Perrina. The OSCE representative in Azerbaijan came forward with concerned commen’s.

Mamedov was also quoted by Baku-based news media outlets saying the OSCE Minsk group co-chairmen–who are set to make another visit to the region in autumn–will most probably bring with them new proposals which they believe will help Armenia and Azerbaijan overcome the bitter stand off over Nagorno Karabakh.
