Armenian Turkish Border Barrier Might Work for Armenia

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–A story in the Russian language Novoye Vremya says that voices in Ankara that demand improvement of relations with Armenia are becoming louder and louder.

Irrespective of who will come to power in the coming pre-term parliamentary election–it is obvious the new Turkish authorities will face strong pressure from the forces that want establishment of normal relations with Armenia. New and new Turkish politicians–businessmen and intellectuals are realizing there is no alternative to opening the border–it says.

The daily quotes the mayor of eastern Turkish city of Kars Naif Alibeiogli saying that the sealed borders with Armenia is a hard blow to the economy of the eastern regions of Turkey. He says unemployment and migration have assumed catastrophic scale–meanwhile–he says–the Kars region had been developing dynamically until 1993 when the border was open.

The Armenian daily says that some 23,000 Turks have signed a petition to the Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit demanding that borders with Armenia open.
