News of Vanadlism to Orbeli’s Grave Proven False

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–"I personally visited the St. Petersburg Cemetery–and I have to state that no damage has been done to the Orbeli family tombstones," announced St. Petersburg Armenian Consul Rouben Hakobian in response to news reports concerning the desecration of academician Hovsep Orbeli’s grave by unknown assailants.

According to Hakobian–more than 100 grave sites of Russian–Jewish–Tatar and Georgian cultural leaders were vandalized during the nights of July 17 and July 21.

"I believe that the extremist acts recently committed in Russia are not directed at a single ethnic minority–yet against a general population–which of course is also dangerous," stated Hakobian.

"Of course–the act must be condemned–but there will be those who will attempt to use the incident to alter local Armeno-Russian relations. We have to be cautious and look at the issue from all sides."
