ARF Bureau Rep Meetswith Despuy Community

YEREVAN (ARF Press Office)–ARF Bureau Chairman Hrant Markarian–Bureau member Mario Nalbandian–and Executive Director of ANC-South America Pedro Mouradian met with Dr. Leandro Despuy–the Auditor General of Argentina–on August 22.

Dr. Despuy–until assuming the post of Auditor General in March 2002–served as the President of the UN Commission on Human Rights.

Unger Markarian thanked Dr. Despuy for his advocacy in defense of Armenian and human rights. They also discussed the political situation and socioeconomic realities of Armenia and the Caucasus.

ARF Bureau Meetings in Buenos Aires

One of the objectives of ARF Bureau Chairman Hrant Markarian on his two-week visit to Argentina has been to meet with members of the community to convey the organization’s message.

Unger Markarian visited the Armenia Cultural Association’s Khrimian School on August 21 and met with the heads of its various sections. Also present were ARF–ARS–and Hamazkaine representatives.

Visiting different parts of the school–Unger Markarian spoke with numerous students. During a luncheon with administrators and teachers–he spoke of his experiences and praised Khrimian Shool’s level of education–also discussing the implementation of programs initiated by the Armenian Ministry of Education to train Diasoran teachers.

In the afternoon–Unger Markarian met with Armenian Ambassador to Argentina Ara Ayvazian; also present were ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian and Chairman of the Central Committee of ARF-South America Haroutiun Ohannesian.

The group discussed the current situation in Armenia and the importance of the ARF’s participation in national political life.

Ambassador Ayvazian specifically noted the important role of the ARF during the recent visit of President Robert Kocharian to the region and expressed hope that relations with the ARF would become even closer in the interest of defending the Armenian Case.

Unger Markarian then headed for the Armenia Cultural Association center–where he was received by a large number of fellow ARF members. After an interview with a radio station–Markarian participated in a joint meeting of the ARF gomidehs of Buenos Aires–during which he presented an address on political matters. He also discussed the Karabakh liberation struggle–the current situation of Armenia–and the participation of the ARF in national life–and the Armenia’s of Javakhk (in Georgia)–as well as the activities of the party under the difficult conditions that exist in the Caucasus. The meeting ended with members’ questions–to which the Bureau representative provided exhaustive answers.

Together with Nalbandian and members of the ARF Central Committee–Unger Markarian on August 22 met with the ARS of South America Regional Executive. He was briefed on the work of the ARS in the region–and subsequently the participants discussed matters of mutual concern–particularly the various programs of the two organizations in Armenia–Karabakh–and Javakhk.

That night–in honor of Markarian a reception took place–attended by Ambassador Ayvazian–Primate of the Armenian Church of Argentina Archbishop Gisak Mouratian–and the representatives of various community associations–including the ARF and affiliated organizations. In a warm and amiable atmosphere–the ARF Central Committee chairman–Haroutiun Ohannesian–presented Markarian to the participants. The Bureau representative discussed the present situation of Armenia–highlighting the importance of the Diaspora in securing the prosperity and strengthening of the homeland.
