Bureau Chairman Continues Meetings in South America

MEETINGS IN CORDOBA AND REMEMBERING UNGER YERGANIAN

On Saturday–August 24–ARF Bureau Chairman Hrant Markarian and ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian traveled to the second largest Argentine state of Cordoba–home to about 10,000 Armenia’s. There they met with ARF ungers as well as ARS and Homenetmen representatives.

On the following day–the delegation attended requiem services for Unger Aram Yerganian at Soorp Hagop Church–and later visited Unger Yerganian’s monument at the Antranig agoump where Unger Markarian presented the Bureau’s message which was broadcast by the Armenian radio station. Representatives of all community organizations attended the ceremony.

Unger Markarian’s visit inspired the entire Cordoba Armenian community.

MEETINGS WITH INTERNATIONAL AND CRIMINAL LAW EXPERT LEVON ARSLANIAN AND ARMENIA-ARGENTINA TRADE PALACE REPS.

ARF Bureau Chairman Hrant Markarian met last Monday in Buenos Aires with international and criminal law expert Levon Arslanian. Also present were ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian–Chairman of the Central Committee of ARF-South America Haroutiun Ohannesian and Central Committee member Pedro Mooradian.

In 1985 Levon Arslanian led the court that sentenced Argentine leaders of the military dictatorship for abuses during the 1976-1982 military rule.

The meeting reviewed progress on international recognition of the Armenian genocide–and possible legal grounds to charge the process. They also discussed the social–economic and political experiences of Armenia and Argentina.

On the same day–Chairman Markarian–accompanied by the same delegation–met with the President of the Armenia-Argentina Trade Palace–Manuel Arslanian and member of the Board–Rita Ajemian. The group discussed trade possibilities between Armenia and Argentina. Unger Markarian noted current efforts underway in Armenia to create a positive economic and legal environment for trade. At this time–the Armenia-Argentine Trade Palace representative briefed the meeting on the difficulties Armenian-Argentine businessmen have faced in Armenia in undertaking economic initiatives there. Unger Markarian stated that he would help in finding a resolution to this problem.

BRAZIL

Unger Markarian will travel to Brazil on the next leg of his trip to visit with the San Paolo Armenian community. San Paolo is the largest industrial–financial and commercial center in Argentina and the most densely populated city in South America. ARF Bureau member Mario Nalbandian and Chairman of the Central Committee of ARF-South America Haroutiun Ohannesian will accompany Unger Markarian.

On the two day visit–the delegation is scheduled to also meet with Brazilian political figures and authorities. They will visit the San Paolo governor’s palace to meet with the Governor’s first secretary–the President of San Paolo Legislature–Walter Feldman–and several other legislators.

The ARF delegation will also meet with His Excellency Ashod Yeghiazarian–Consul General of the Republic of Armenia to Brazil.
