ARF Continues Meetings with Political Parties

"Both our parties admit that irregularities during elections should be excluded and that the future parliament should be composed of stable political parties," said NA member and head of the National Democratic Party–Shavarsh Kocharian after his meeting with ARF Bureau member Vahan Hovhannisian–ARF Armenia Supreme Body chairman Armen Rustamian and ARF faction leader Aghvan Vartanian–at the ARF "Simon Vratsian" center October 12.

Kocharian said these series of meetings between the parties are essential. "This process will end with signing a memorandum; the number of parties to sign the memorandum–however–will depend on its wording. Because conducting fair and open elections depends on the authorities–a message addressed to the authorities pointing out their obligation to conduct fair and open elections–should be included in the memorandum," he said–adding that if this message is included in the memorandum–his sees no reason why his party should not join the memorandum.

The ARF also met with the "Orinats Yerkir" (OY) party leadership. The sides agreed that authorities must stay out of upcoming local elections–as disturbing examples of such interference have been detected in some communities.

The OY leadership praised the ARF’s initiative to hold meetings between parties and attached great importance to the resulting memorandum. The sides also noted that society must develop confidence in these memorandums–as voter apathy has emerged as a result of the public’s lack of confidence.
