NICOSIA (Yerkir)–The Armenian National Committee of Cyprus (ANCC) awarded the Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus Uranios Ionadis–the ANC Person of the Year medal this past Saturday. The event took place at the Nicosia Hilton.
Representatives from various political parties and high-ranking officials joined Araxi Abelian of the ANC of Europe–and over 120 other prominent Armenia’s to honor Ionadis for his long-term contribution to the Armenian community of Cyprus.
In their speeches–Andranik Ashjian of the ANCC and Araxi Abelian congratulated Ionadis and praised him for the great job he has done.
In turn–Ionadis thanked everyone for the honor–stating that the government of Cyprus has always appreciated the Armenian community of Cyprus–ant that the government of Cyprus considers preserving the rights of all Cypriots–including Armenia’s–a priority.
This marks that fifth year that the ANC of Cyprus has awarded prominent Cypriots with the ANC Person of the Year medal. Former President Spiros Cyrianu–the first person to mention the Armenian Genocide at the UN–is among those who have received the medal.
