ANCA Congratulates Armenia on Economic Progress WTO Entry

WASHINGTON–DC–The Armenian National Committee of America issued a statement of congratulations to the Republic of Armenia on its accession into the World Trade Organization on Tuesday. The successful inclusion of Armenia into the WTO is a sign of Armenia’s continued economic progress.

Armenia applied for WTO membership in 1992–beginning a ten year process to meet the qualifications for WTO membership. Over the course of the last decade–Armenia’successfully brought its state trade legislation in compliance with WTO requiremen’s. Having gained formal acceptance into the WTO–the Republic of Armenia’s parliament must pass a set of 19 WTO agreemen’s to finalize Armenia’s accession.

"We are very pleased to have been able to play a positive role in Armenia’s acceptance today into the WTO," said Aram Hamparian–Executive Director of the ANCA–"this will allow Armenia to further diversify its economy–solidifying its position in the (Continued from front page) region as a commercial leader."

The ANCA stated that Armenia’s inclusion into the WTO will also mean greater foreign investment in Armenia’s economy–and pledged its support to help strengthen relations between the United States and Armenia through such endeavors as State trade and commerce offices.

In September of 2002–the ANCA-Western Region was successful in having Governor Gray Davis sign a bill which would establish an official California Regional Trade Office in the Republic of Armenia. The bill was introduced by California State Senator Jack Scott (D-Pasadena–Glendale).

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations.
