ANCA ACTION ALERT Respond to Los Angeles Times Editorial Promoting Turkey’s Accession to The European Union

Current Status:

Just days after writing two separate articles related to the Armenian Genocide and the desecration of Armenian cultural and historical monumen’s in Eastern Turkey (see December 10 Asbarez)–the Los Angeles Times wrote an editorial on December 11 encouraging Turkey’s admission to the European Union. The editorial urged the European Union to embrace Turkey so that it "?might nudge other Muslim countries toward democratic values." Included below is the full text of the editorial as well as the articles on the movie "Ararat" and the desecration of Armenian Holy sites in Eastern Turkey.

What You Can Do:

Contact the Los Angeles Times Reader Response Department and express your opinion of the editorial and the articles that were published this week. The Turkish lobby has targeted the Los Angeles Times with emails and telephone calls to coerce the newspaper to not write about the Armenian Genocide. Speak out about misrepresentations of facts and express your appreciation for accurate and factual journalistic practices.

Call the LA Times at 1-800-LA TIMES–ask for the reader response desk and leave a message on their recorder or write a letter and send it to 202 W 1st Street–Los Angeles–CA 90012- or by email to

What to Say:

Include any of the following points:

– Thank the LA Times for the Mark Arax article about the survivor of the Armenian Genocide who saw the movie Ararat.

– The use of the term ‘allegation’ when they writing about the genocide is inaccurate and inappropriate. The facts of the Armenian Genocide are indisputable and have been documented by numerous Holocaust and Genocide scholars throughout the academic world and through eye witness accounts.

Fact is fact. The word ‘allegation’ is used in an article about Akhdamar and the destruction of Armenian Holy sites.

– Express your disappointment in the Los Angeles Time’s omission of the specific mention of the Armenian Genocide in its list of human rights violations carried out by the Republic of Turkey along with its desecration of historical Holy Armenian sites in the historic Armenian homeland.
