ANCA WR Reception in Sacramento to Honor Armenian Americans in California State Legislature

LOS ANGELES– The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region (ANCA-WR) will be hosting a special inaugural reception on January 6–2003 in Sacramento to honor Armenian-Americans serving in the California State Legislature. The reception will be held on the same day that Governor Gray Davis is sworn-in to his second term in office. Members of the State’s Executive Branch–Constitutional officers and State Assemblymembers and State Senators will attend the ANCA-WR reception.

After the November 2002 election cycle–the number of Armenian-Americans in the California State Assembly and Senate nearly doubled–and is now the highest in the history of the State of California. In November 2002–Republicans Steve Samuelian (R-Fresno) and Greg Aghazarian (R-Stockton) won seats in the California State Assembly–bringing the total number of Armenian-Americans serving in the legislature up to five. The newly elected Assemblymembers will join current Assemblymember Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) and Senators Charles Poochigian (R-Fresno) and Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco).

"The ANCA-WR and our many local ANC chapters greatly respect each of the five Armenian-Americans who are serving in the California State Legislature," commented ANCA-WR Board member Raffi Hamparian. "The ANCA-WR and our many grassroots supporters look forward to thanking these public officials at our reception on January 6. We have no doubt that these outstanding public officials will provide–in the coming legislative session–the principled leadership the State of California needs to grow and prosper," he added.
