Foreign Affairs Ministry Statement on INS Revision

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–A spokeswoman for the Armenian Foreign Affairs Ministry Tsuinig Aghajanian–issued a statement today following the controversial US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) proposal to include Armenia on the list of countries whose non-immigrant male nationals over the age of 16 would be required to register and report their movemen’s to the INS. The ministry’s statement reads:

"The US government–had–as part of their security concerns–issued an order requiring foreign nationals from certain countries–including Armenia–follow special registration regulations with the US Immigration and Naturalization Service.

We worked with the US administration to clarify the circumstances. It became apparent that there had been a misunderstanding and these issues do not in any way relate to Armenian citizens. As a result of our discussions–the US administration modified the regulation–and Armenia has been removed from the list.

The disbelief of our community–in the face of such news–was understandable. Now–we are pleased that indeed there is no such policy regarding Armenian nationals in the US."
