Security and Interior Ministries Restructured

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan-RFE/RL)–President Robert Kocharian announced on Wednesday a major restructuring of Armenia’s two main law-enforcement agencies in accordance with two recently enacted laws.

Based on the order–Armenia’s National Security Ministry will be reorganized as the Service of National Security of the government of Armenia–and the Interior Ministry will be reorganized as the Police of the Republic of Armenia.

Based on the Constitution and laws–the former National Security Minister Carlos Petrossian will be appointed the director of the Service of National Security of Armenia–the former minister of the Interior Ministry Haig Haroutiunian will be appointed head of the Police of the Republic of Armenia.

Authorities said that the planned restructuring is in tune with Armenia’s integration into various European bodies.
