Azeri Advisor Accuses West of Coaxing Azerbaijan

BAKU (Armenpress)–A former advisor to Azeri president on foreign affairs Vafa Guluzada lashed out at the OSCE Minsk Group and the European Union–accusing them of trying to "coax" Azerbaijan into territorial concessions in exchange for peace. In an interview with Azerbaijani Turan news agency Guluzada said this policy of European bodies was unacceptable and contradicted the national interests of Azerbaijan. He also argued that some political circles in the country are prepared for such concessions.

Guluzada continued–claiming that "it’s naive to expect the USA to support Azerbaijan’s position on the Karabagh conflict in exchange for Azerbaijan’s support to Washington in the anti-Iraq coalition. The USA will first of all be governed by its own interests. Washington would always give preference to good relations with the Armenian lobby rather than support Azerbaijan’s fair deman’s."

"We cannot expect Washington to make Yerevan recognize Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and enforce what we believe is a fair settlement. Therefore–the people of the country and its politicians have to realize that the resolution of the problem depends only on us," Guluzada said.

He said that at present–Azerbaijani society and its elite are very relaxed in their expectation of political dividends from the oil factor and from friendly relations with the USA and the West as a whole. "This–however–does not mean that the Americans or the Turks will fight instead of the Azerbaijanis," Guluzada said.
