Sixth Session of US Armenia Task Force in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The 6th session of the intergovernmental US-Armenia Task Force got underway in Yerevan Monday–reported Armenia’s Ministry of Finance and Economy.

During the first day of meetings–the sides discussed specifics of US assistance to Armenia in order to spark investment opportunities and trade between the two countries.

The struggle against corruption–human trafficking–money laundering–Armenia’s banking sector–poverty reduction and–reforms in the energy sector were also reviewed.

The fifth session had met in Washington–DC in November 2002–and concluded with the signing of an agreement to ensure lasting structural reforms and improvement of the rule of law in return for continued US assistance. At that time–US Ambassador to Armenia John Ordway complained that the Armenian government had yet to come up with an effective plan on corruption reduction–despite its general acceptance that something has to be done about it.

The Task Force is designed to enable the Governmen’s of the United States and Armenia to coordinate better their efforts to promote economic cooperation and assist Armenia in its transition to a market economy.
